October marks the official "Scary Stories" season in the library (or classroom). And while readers of all ages always seem to ask for a SCARY story, fall is always a good season for those books best read on a dark and stormy night.

Check out all the things you will need to get in the scary story mood this October. You'll also find some great ghost stories, literary costume ideas, and a how-to art lesson for decorating pumpkins by author/illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka. Plus, you'll always find books for all ages, curriculum connections, #classroombookaday options, a terrific read for First Chapter Friday, new titles coming from POPULAR authors, book-to-movie news, and more.

It had the potential for being a crazy week...

Full moon... Friday the 13th... not just in the same week but on the SAME DAY!

I was prepared for the worst (seriously, if you work in education you know what I'm talking about). But I was pleasantly surprised that this week was actually one of the best as far as reading goes.

There were many 5 STAR BOOKS this week (HOORAY!), so I decided to dedicate the Friday Five to highlighting them. You can watch the video below, or click here to view this and other Friday Five booktalks.

If you marked yourself "safe" from the Full-Moon-Friday-the-13th school day this week, I hope you'll consider one or more of these books as your reward.

Happy Reading!

EDITED 9/16/19: This morning, the National Book Foundation announced that one of the books I highlight in this video, Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds, was long-listed for this year's National Book Award for Young People's Literature!

Books mentioned in the video:

The Proudest Blue by Muhammad/Ali/Aly

Home in the Woods by Wheeler

Magic Ramen by Wang

Look Both Ways by Reynolds

Beverly, Right Here by DiCamillo Call Me American by Iftin Stargazing by Wang

Or in this case, the dedication is the hook!

Yesterday, one of my senior Contemporary Lit students mentioned her frustration at the portrayal of “feminism” she encountered in another class. From the textbook to classroom discussions that disparaged and even wrongly defined the term. (She’s actually so angered, she’s composing a letter to the textbook author. Which is epic on so many levels). So, I think this book by Jen Mathieu is JUST what we need!

From the opening dedication, to the very last word on the last page, I love #moxie! It was one of my Top 10 books for High School in my #yalit seminars.

But now I’m off to buy more copies because I definitely have some students who must read it immediately!
